Benjamin Spencer
Benjamin is a footwear and accessories designer and a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate in the United States. Passionate about sustainability in fashion, he is dedicated to developing innovative materials that address the industry's waste problem. As part of his work, Benjamin launched the first collection for his brand, Thomas Benjamin, using cutting-edge sustainable techniques. By harnessing the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast used in kombucha tea production, he successfully grew a textile with properties similar to leather. In addition, Benjamin is exploring other sustainable solutions for fashion, including bioplastics and electrothermal textiles.

Benjamin is driven by a commitment to innovation and originality, constantly looking toward the future of footwear and fashion. His design philosophy revolves around creating products that are not only aesthetically striking but also groundbreaking in their approach to materials and sustainability.
By blending creativity with a forward-thinking mindset, Benjamin continues to develop designs that challenge conventions and set new standards in the industry.
With support from the Creatives for Our Future programme, Benjamin has advanced his exploration of sustainable materials, including the development of bioplastics and a leather alternative made from kombucha.
These groundbreaking materials have been integral to his footwear collection, reflecting his dedication to shaping a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.

Increasing research into thermochromic dyes and bioplastics, the fashion industry as a whole could one day cut down its carbon and ecological footprint tenfold.
