Shuzo Matsuhashi
Shuzo is a textile and fashion designer passionate about preserving traditional craftsmanship. After studying textile design in Tokyo, he moved to Vienna to further his studies in fashion design at the University of Applied Arts. Skilled in weaving, dyeing, printing, and knitting, Shuzo draws inspiration from the art of mending to create a sustainable fashion collection. His project repurposes worn-out clothing and recycled materials, challenging the fast-fashion culture where garments are quickly discarded rather than repaired. Shuzo’s work advocates for a more mindful approach to fashion, celebrating longevity, resourcefulness, and the beauty of renewal.

Shuzo aims to challenge mainstream fashion culture by highlighting the value of craftsmanship and advocating for a shift toward sustainability in the industry. Whilst in Vienna, he hoped to visit craftsmen, artisans, and factories across Europe.
With support from the Creatives for Our Future programme, he spent time in southern France, researching and sourcing beautiful vintage fabrics such as embroidered bedspreads and lace.
This journey allowed him to deepen his knowledge of traditional techniques and refine his mending skills, which were key to developing his “Re-craft” collection.
In addition, through sessions with his mentor, Shuzo gained valuable insights into expanding his business, learning how to scale production and exploring different methods for crafting sustainable fashion.

There is a culture where you can only wear clothes for one season. I want to contribute to a sustainable society by positively proving the importance of craft spirit in the fashion industry and changing that culture.
